1. Buy new school supplies.
Even if you aren’t a student, take advantage of the cheap prices on notebooks, organizing tools and art supplies to stock up on what you need for taking care of your budget, writing down your dreams or just getting creative. And buy the BIG box of crayons.
2. Jump in the leaves.
Rake your yard – or your very thankful neighbor’s yard- into a giant pile of leaves and then leap inside. This works better with friends, and even better than that with a dog.
3.Get in the mood.
Halloween is right around the corner and the spirits are upon us. Rent videos of your favorite frightening movies, scary new ones that you haven’t seen yet, or the funny 80’s kind whose bad outfits almost make you laugh more than the awful special effects.
4. Learn to cook a signature stew.
Autumn is the perfect time for comfort food and warm dishes. Stews and soups are fun to make and will fragrance your home all day long. Experiment on a few recipes until you find your favorite, and then serve it up to hungry friends with warm biscuits or cornbread.
5. Have a pumpkin-carving party.
You provide the tools and inspiration, everyone brings a pumpkin, and then let the slicing begin. Offer silly prizes like rubber spiders for the funniest, scariest and most unique.
6. Plan a Halloween party.
Halloween parties are always extra wild because costumes and masks make people feel free and uninhibited. Planning an event is almost as much fun as throwing an event, so get started now to get the maximum pleasure out of your party.
7. Go to a football game.
The sound of drum cadences, the smell of fresh-cut gridiron and the taste of game nachos will take you back to a simpler time. Root for your favorite team, or just pick the underdog and go for it.
8. Find a fire.
As the season wanes, humans naturally lean towards fire and light and the elements of summer that will soon be gone. Go to a bonfire on the beach, a fire-twirling exhibition or just cozy up next to a fireplace at a quite restaurant, and silently give thanks for the hot flames that have kept the human race alive.
9. Go apple picking. Get together some friends who aren’t afraid of a little dorky fun, and hit up the local orchard. Finish your night off with apple cider and some hot apple pie – make it from scratch or buy one from the grocery store.
10. Take a weekend trip. It doesn’t have to be pricey – head to a nearby national park you have never been to, a beloved beach or quaint mountain town. Rest, relax, recreate – and be sure to take the long way home through the leaves.
