Camping, kayaking, trips to the pool or beach, and picnicking are all popular outdoor activities we enjoy during the summer.

Enjoying too much summer sun not only wears you down, it also increases your exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. The summer sun can also subject you to heat exhaustion or stroke.

Taking the time to make sure you protect your skin and cool down is the goal of Summer Fun Safety Month, which is observed during the month of August. While not an officially recognized month, the National Safety Council started celebrating Summer Fun Month in 1996. The NSC uses the month to educate Americans about the best ways to protect themselves from sun and heat.

As your Detroit cooling experts, C & C Heating & Air Conditioning also knows a thing or two about staying cool.

Cooling the Body

Cold water is the key element to staying cool during the summer months. Whether it’s staying hydrated, taking cold showers or applying cold, damp clothes to your forehead, neck and wrists, humans and animals have used clean, cool water to stay comfortable in hot weather since time began.

You need to keep your body cool while enjoying outdoor activities. This includes wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and using portable fans, misting bottles and cooling towels.

When the temperature gets above 90 degrees and the humidity is high, people run the risk of suffering heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Bringing down your body temperature is the best way to avoid those health risks.

Cooling the Indoors

It’s also good to limit your time outdoors during August. While you may enjoy spending the day at the beach or hiking at your favorite national park, you should also make plans to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day.

While fans and cool water can help you beat the heat, the best way to stay cool is to seek out air-conditioned spaces. Take a break at places like libraries, malls, movie theaters and even your home.

If your air conditioner isn’t able to keep your home comfortable, call in a professional HVAC technician to determine the reason why. The cause of your issue could be a refrigerant leak or a compressor issue that can be repaired. But if your AC unit is more than 10 years old, it may need to be replaced.

Newer AC systems may be less expensive in the long run. Thanks to advancements in technology and design, modern air conditioning systems have improved airflow and use more eco-friendly refrigerants, which can keep you cooler for less money and without causing as much damage to the environment.

In addition to better designs, some newer AC units may also qualify for local, state and federal rebates and tax credits. This can make the ticket price more tolerable.

This is where C & C can help.

Our expert HVAC technicians understand how important your air conditioning is during the Dog Days of Summer. They can help you pick an AC system that is right for your house and right for your family. We can also help you find some rebates and tax credits so you can afford a newer, more efficient system.
