It’s the spooky season when we expect to be frightened by Halloween ghouls and goblins.

But if the shadows you see on your walls are the result of mold or the cackles you hear are from family members coughing, you might have an issue with your indoor air quality (IAQ).

If you’ve noticed musty odors, your home stays dusty or you have respiratory issues, your IAQ should be checked. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that indoor pollutants are often two to five times higher than outdoor concentrations.

You can check the air yourself with an at-home test kit. While these kits can analyze some pollutants, they do have some limitations. If you want a more comprehensive assessment, it may be time to call the experts.

Calling in the Professionals

When you’ve determined you need professional help to test and clean your air, call a team with a holistic approach. Whether you need your ductwork cleaned or need to consider a whole home air cleaning system, you want experts trained to provide these services.

Many fly-by-night duct cleaning services are not certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). They may also not have liability insurance or good references and can’t tell you what safety guidelines they follow.

A thorough air quality test can take one to two hours. Not only is the air tested, but the professional will discuss your problems with you before making a final determination.

Types of Remediation

These experts will then make a series of recommendations to help you clean your air. These include:

  • Duct-cleaning services: If your home’s ductwork has a buildup of dust, animal dander, mold or other contaminants, you may need to have them professionally cleaned.
  • Air filtration systems: Your clean air expert may also recommend a whole-home air filtration system that attaches to your HVAC system. While there are portable air filtration systems, these can be expensive. Germicidal lights, air purifiers and whole-home humidifiers can be attached to your air handler to kill or filter pollutants or add moisture to dry air.
  • Ventilators: These systems exchange stale air from inside with fresher outdoor air while ensuring you still have energy-efficient climate control.

While Halloween will come and go this year, your IAQ won’t improve without some help.
