AC Malfunction in Roseville, MIOne of the easiest but most cost-effective ways to ensure your air conditioning unit works efficiently is to regularly change the air filter.

But do you know what filter is right for your home and the unit? How do you choose the filter that will both fit your budget and keep the cool air flowing?

Your Detroit cooling experts at C & C Heating & Air Conditioning can break down the differences. There are three primary factors you can use to determine the best air filter for your needs: Size, material, and MERV rating.

1. Filter size:

This is important if you want the filter to fit your system and work to its most efficient. Simply look at the label of your existing filter to see the size listed. Or, you can measure the filter box yourself if you don’t think the current model fits correctly. Most home filters are 1-inch thick but there are always anomalies.

2. Materials:

Filters come in a variety of materials including paper, foam, activated carbon, aluminum, steel, fiberglass, and plastic. The fiberglass filter is probably the most common while the activated carbon is extremely effective. All materials have their pros and cons. Consult your air conditioning manufacturer’s website to see which filter is recommended for your system.

3. MERV rating:

The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value is derived from a test method developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the higher the rating, the better the filter is at trapping specific types of particles. For most home systems, a filter with a MERV rating of between six and 12 is usually the best choice.
